Changing the Story is a community filmmaking project that started at the University of Leeds. It is a collaboration with partners in South Africa, including Tshepo Hope Safe Park, The Bishop Simeon Trust and Themba Interactive.
In June 2016, a group of University of Leeds students travelled to the Tsakane Township in Gauteng province to create comics and films with children between ages 8-15. By providing them with the chance to create their own stories and tell them in their own way, we wanted to give them a voice. Our goal is that, through this project, new stories can emerge that accurately convey the experiences and hopes of the community.
Now we have returned, the final products will be published as part of an online exhibition that will be featured in South Africa and the UK. We are participating in a range of events to promote the films, as well as running school workshops to encourage debate about global citizenship amongst students.
